The Cape Deli success story
Cape Deli, with our two processing facilities in the Saxonberg Business Park, located in Blackheath, is managed by the three executive directors of the company, namely Marius Nel, Morne Vorster and Theuns Stofberg. Together, these three men have all contributed to the success of Cape Deli in their own unique way.
Marius Nel, founder and co-director of Cape Deli started a biltong business in his home town of Stellenbosch back in December of 2003. Marius’ biltong making venture had humble beginnings, starting off in his own home. Here, Marius made a business of manufacturing biltong on a relatively small scale for his own two biltong retail outlets. It did not, however, take long for his business to expand significantly, and over the next two years (thanks to his knowledge of marketing and sales) his initial two retail outlets grew to 20! It was during this period of such significant growth in retail that Marius also added a wholesale division to his business.
Soon, the wholesale division of Marius’ business began growing so quickly that he decided to sell off all of his own retail outlets in order to focus exclusively on manufacturing biltong on a larger scale to supply to other retailers and with this, Cape Deli’s focus shifted to private label contract packaging.
It was during this time (2006) that Morne Vorster, former supplier to Cape Deli and experienced meat trader/broker, joined Marius in his venture. Soon after going into business with Marius, Morne took over all duties surrounding raw meat procurement.
In 2007, Cape Deli once again became one member richer, being joined by (at that time) financial manager, Theuns Stofberg, former partner in an accounting firm with years of experience in the field of finance. Since he became involved with Cape Deli, he has been responsible for all administration, financial and accounting duties, as well as all of the operational infrastructure that supports the business, including IT. Theuns was appointed to the position of Executive Director of Cape Deli in 2015.
Along with Marius’ entrepreneurial ideas, initiative and understanding of the market opportunity that lay before him, these three partners have built a strong, unique and successful business, true to the thrifty South African spirit.
Today, both Marius and Morne are in charge of operations, marketing and client relations. While Marius’ niche is product development, Morne additionally manages raw meat procurement, with corporate governance under the helm of Theuns. With our extensive 15-year experience in the biltong industry, we have established ourselves as industry leaders, perfectly positioned to offer our customers superior product quality, matched by our excellent customer service.
